Michael Karatsu is an associate of PECA and has twenty years of
clinical and financial healthcare experience in a variety of settings. He worked as a
clinical pharmacist for a major integrated delivery network in Southern California. While
serving as a clinical pharmacist, Dr. Karatsu developed unit dose, IV additive, total
parenteral nutrition formulation, and aminoglycoside dosing protocols.
Following his experience as a clinical pharmacist, Dr. Karatsu joined a
national accounting firm serving as a manager in the Southern California office. In this
capacity, he applied his clinical and financial background to a variety of client hospital
projects including extensive operational reviews of clinical and support departments,
market analyses, prospective financial analyses, and due diligence engagements. In
addition to this experience, he was a member of the national materials management
competency team to support the development of the National Performance Indicators projects
co-ventured with the American Society for Healthcare Materials Management of the American
Hospital Association.
During his extensive experience, Dr. Karatsu has serviced as an
assistant hospital controller, hospital controller, and administrator of a multi-specialty
clinic. He has served as faculty for educational programs sponsored by the Healthcare
Financial Management Association and the American Society for Healthcare Materials
Management.
Recently, Dr. Karatsu conducted a clinical and operational analysis of
the Pharmacy department for a major Southern California healthcare organization. His
activities included review of the organization structure, staffing, services, clinical
programs, and drug utilization by product line. In addition, Dr. Karatsu has conducted
drug utilization analyses in conjunction with the PACERTM programs.
Dr. Karatsu received his Doctor of Pharmacy and Masters of Business
Administration from the University of Southern California.
